Before I start, I just want to say that I am no makeup guru or anything. I'll just be telling you basics and makeup styles you can try, what you need to have and etc. I will not be demonstrating cuz I'm too lazy =P, however, I will give you some sample vids from youtube. <3 And what I say here is based on asian skin cuz here is quite hot and moist, so makeup is diff from those who live in countries of different climates.
So, okay, you're a beginner/newbie in cosplay? Dunno anything about makeup? Well, here are some information you should know (which you can google it anyways)
First of all,
what you need. It's important to have these but some just depends on your situation I guess.
- Foundation
- Powder foundation
- Concealer
- Eye shadow
- Eyeliner
- Moisturizer - buy if your foundation doesn't include it- recommended for flaky skin/dry skin
- Blush
- Mascara/eyelash curler
- False eyelashes&eyelash glue
- Lip-bum&lipstick
- Sponge, brushes(get at least 4 different types according to the above list), add more yourself *lazy mode* =w=
- Make up base (if you're damn lazy like me, dun buy =w=)-completely optional I guess?
- Bronzer (if you're good with basic makeup, buy this)-optional
Foundation is the most BASIC thing you need. And by this, I mean liquid foundation. Why do I say so? Because it doesn't easily come off if you wipe your face compared to powder foundation. I highly recommend BB Cream since it has base, SPF26+ and moisturizer. In Malaysia, it's friggin HOT here, so makeup has to be durable to heat. Yup, it melts so.....
Powder foundation is another way to make your makeup last longer and it also covers up "shiny" spots on your face, like your nose. Basically, what I do is I put it on after liquid foundation.
Ps. the tone is up to you. If you want to look fairer, buy lighter tone but if you don't care, choose according to your skin tone.
Concealer- this is a life-savor I tell you. If you have blemishes or dark spots you want to cover, this is totally the thing to buy. Buy a slightly lighter tone than your skin tone so it can cover up nicely. Important for photoshoots, especially close-up shots.
Eye shadow- neutral colour palette is more useful, can use for any character. However, you can buy other colours according to your character, bear in mind that if you're not used to makeup but decided to use colours like blue or pink anyways, high chance you will look like someone punched you in the eye. Familiarize yourself with neutral colour before the other colours.
Eyeliner- Gel(black) is the best because it is easy to handle. Also, buy white eyeliner for your waterline(refer to pic below). This will make your eyes look slightly bigger or if you wear it in a specific way, your eyes would look more dramatic. #Caution for white eyeliner: make sure you keep it clean if not, eye infection.
Blush- stick to a natural look. If you wear hot pink blush, you'd probably end up looking like a clown, so careful on how you wear it. This is useful for female characters and if you look too pale 0-0.
Mascara/eyelash curler- Mascara is a must to make your eyes look way bigger and anime-like, but if you're damn lazy like me, just curl your eyelashes and wear false lashes without mascara.
False eyelashes&glue- best way to look dramatic. The type of false eyelashes you buy can effect your look- natural or dramatic.
Lipbum/lipstick/lipgloss- Lipbum is a definite must. you don't want chap-lips =3=. Nude lipgloss/lipstick is the most useful thing EVAH. I recommend. Girl character- can choose according to your character. Can give effect to your character whether you want to look cute or sexy or badass =w=b
I won't give explanation to the rest kay~ go google yourself.
And now, samples of makeup styles~

Simple natural girl make-up(can be used for any female chara.) |

Her eye make-up style is quite popular here in Malaysia, can use on any character, as long as it suits them

Usually, they'd use this technique for those fantasy character look, both male and female |
I apologize for being too lazy to write this post properly or even bothered to find proper photos. Kind of skeptical about using other people's photos to give example. But the pictures above are one of the most common ones la~ So, no, you're not missing much.
You can google tutorials specifically for asian type look cuz sorry to say but our eyes are smaller than American or European people (well, at least mine is smaller la...I dunno about the rest). I usually get tutorials from a facebook page~ ah but it's in chinese la
